Black Tea
This is Europe's and Argentina's favorite tea. It is obtained by withering, curling, fermenting and drying the leaf buds, fresh leaves, petioles and tender stalks of the tea plant.
One of the special features of this variety is that its leaves go through a fermenting process after being picked, which lends it its characteristic dark color. This oxidation provides it with stronger aromatic properties. Black tea contains small amounts of a considerable number of vitamins considered essential for staying healthy:
» Carotene, a precursor to vitamin A, has antioxidant and protective properties.
» Thiamin (vitamin B1) and riboflavin (vitamin B2) are both essential for releasing energy from food.
» Nicotinic acid and pantothenic acid are necessary for the release of energy from fat and carbohydrate.
» Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is essential for a healthy immune system.
» Vitamin B6 is involved in the metabolism of proteins.
Green Tea
This is China's and Japan's favorite tea. It is obtained by heating, curling, fermenting and drying the leaf buds, fresh leaves, petioles and tender stalks of the tea plant. It is in Eastern cultures where Green Tea has been predominantly consumed for thousands of years, and only in recent years have its benefits spread to the West. China is the largest Green Tea producer in the world, and also the biggest consumer, acknowledged for the excellent quality of its plants. Our selection of fresh leaves, which later results in La Virginia Green Tea, comes from this exotic location.
The main difference between black tea and green tea lies in the production process. To obtain green tea, once the leaves are picked, they go through a heat treatment to prevent fermentation and thus preserve the original chemical composition of the plant, rich in antioxidants, vitamins and fluoride. This delicate tea is characterized by its pale green color and a clear herbal flavor.
Due to their unique production process, Green Tea leaves contain:
Polyphenols:powerful antioxidants that prevent oxidation and slow down the cellular ageing process.
Flavonoids:give strength to circulatory system. Powerful antioxidants.
Vitamin E:slows down the cellular ageing process.
Vitamin C: strengthens the immune system.
Vitamin B complex:have a positive effect on the nervous system.
Fluoride:prevents cavities.
Red Tea
There is also a variety called Oolong Tea, which is somewhere in between the last two varieties: a semi-fermented tea whose leaves do not undergo a complete transformation during oxidation.
